5 Lessons in Business from Kung Fu Panda

Julie Faddoul - Wednesday, February 20, 2013

It’s no secret that I’m a bit of a movie buff and I often gain inspiration from the silver screen. I love the movie Kung Fu Panda. The panda, whose name is Po, was chosen by a wise old turtle, Ooguay, as the dragon warrior to defeat the enemy.

Po was a very unlikely candidate for the job, he was a little bit ‘thick boned’ and clumsy. No one believed that HE could be the chosen warrior including his doubtful martial-arts teacher, Shifu, and the Furious Five: Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Viper, and Crane.

The highlight of the movie came from the moments of wisdom and quotes delivered by the various characters. Animated or not… Wisdom can be found anywhere if we are looking for it.

Here are the top 5 Lessons in Business from Kung Fu Panda:

  1. Living In the Now

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.” – Ooguay.

Where is your mind while you’re carrying out your daily activities? If you’re holding onto extra baggage from the past or stressing about the future let it all go! Trust me; it will make your journey so much more enjoyable. Live in the NOW. Have faith in what you are doing and commit to it by being truly PRESENT. Be PRESENT at work, with your team and with your clients.

  2. You Can’t Run Away From Your Destiny

“One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it.” – Ooguay.

Ever had that tingling sensation that you are meant to be doing something else? Perhaps it’s a new direction for your business, or a dream that you’ve had since you were young. Like in my case, after having worked with many different businesses, I finally found my niche; I am passionate about what I do and I am convinced now that I am walking the right path. Each day I come to my office this purpose feels so right to me.

If you find your work environment unsatisfying, if you’re experiencing that sense of discomfort, or your business isn’t unfolding the way you had envisioned. If perhaps, there is still a purpose that you need to fulfill, it may be time to ask yourself “What does my destiny look like?”.

Even if you are on the wrong road right now, it can still lead you to where you need to be. Oddly enough, no matter which road you take, each will lead you to ‘A’ destiny, the trick is to choose your road wisely.

  3. Things Happen For A Reason

“There are no accidents.” - Ooguay

Business is never a bed of roses, but what’s the use of falling to pieces when things don’t go according to plan? Things often happen for a reason and it’s up to us to decipher the lesson from each of our experiences. If you’re in business, you know that shit happens challenges are unavoidable! If you don’t recognise the lesson for what it is, you will find yourself continually stuck or attracting more of the same, and so the vicious cycle continues. Take a deep breath, step aside, take notes and learn so that you can find the value in the mishaps. Only then will you find the momentum you need to keep moving forward.

  4. Your Passion Keeps You Going

Tigress: “It is said that the Dragon Warrior can go for months without eating, surviving on the dew of a single gingko leaf and the energy of the universe.”

Po: “Then I guess my body doesn’t know I’m the Dragon Warrior yet. It’s gonna take a lot more than dew, and, uh, universe juice.”

As a major foodie (I’m eating a lovely red velvet cupcake as I write this) It sounds a little far fetched - to be able to survive without eating. But haven’t you ever experienced the natural adrenalin and high that comes when you were so absorbed in what you were doing that you forgot to eat?
Follow your passion because your passions will fuel you. You’ll know your passion when you find it, because suddenly you will have all the energy you’ll ever need to follow it. When was the last time you were SO wrapped up in your business that you forgot to eat? Even in the most challenging of times, our passions ‘feed’ us and helps us to keep going.

  5. You Can Be the Most Unlikely Hero

“There is no charge for awesomeness - or attractiveness.”
- Po

This last one is perhaps, my most favourite. At the heart of the story, was a character with no apparent gifts or talents. He had to fight feelings of low self esteem and confidence. He had to endure snide remarks by the Furious Five. He had to undergo rounds of brutal martial arts training, that kept him from eating.
Towards the end, Po unraveled the secret of the Dragon scroll from a meeting with his father. His father (who owned a noodle shop) set him free by finally revealing the closely guarded family secret ingredient to their noodle soup: nothing.

Mr. Ping: The secret ingredient is... nothing!

Po: Huh?

Mr. Ping: You heard me. Nothing! There is no secret ingredient.

Po: Wait; wait... its just plain old noodle soup? You don't add some kind of special sauce or something?

Mr. Ping: Don't have to. To make something special you just have to believe it's special.

[Po looks at the scroll again, and sees his reflection in it]

Po: There is no secret ingredient...

Things become special, he explained, because people believe them to be special. As you probably guessed by now, Po saved the day. He realised that he could be awesome if he chose to believe so. And that he was indeed the Dragon Warrior, after all!

There is an unlikely hero in all of us. Go easy on yourself, have clear goals and targets but don’t be too hard on yourself. Even if you feel like at times you may suck be off track a little… keep going. Learn the lessons, make the changes and unleash your own Dragon Warrior to uncover your true awesomeness.
