Empower Rangers… The New Business Superhero!

Julie Faddoul - Thursday, September 20, 2012

When I was 19 I was given my first role as a manager, I was full of doubt, inexperienced and an extremely nervous leader (and I use the word leader loosely, I was more like an extremely eager and passion filled fool).

Even though my heart was in the right place, during my first year on the job I received poor evaluations from senior management and from my staff, and I deserved them.

Since then I worked very hard to master what it means to be a true leader, an effective leader, an inspiring leader.

Over the last 15 years of managing teams I have had the privledge of building and leading many teams.

Other mangers, senior managers and business owners that I would often work with, taught me many lessons, some taught me what TO do, while others taught me (quite obnoxiously) what NOT to do.

At one large company that I worked at, there was a senior manager that was very difficult to work with, if an employee was excited with a great new idea, he would shoot them down, he was dismissive and didn’t listen to people, he would motivate everyone with fear and was generally an all round asshole unpleasant manager. He was the sort of guy that would suck the energy and motivation right out of a room just by walking into it.

After 5 small months on the job, there was a nomination (Staff’s choice) for the Manager they thought had made the biggest impact to the business through their team that year. With 257 people at the company… only 5 nominations were made, and, competing with people in the company that had been managing for 17 years… I was one of them.

My hard work and quest to become an effective leader was finally paying off, my team chose ME and I was so happy, I could hear birds chirping and harps playing and felt like I could do anything!

Well that excitement lasted for a whole 3 minutes because at the company address, the senior manager came over and whispered to me, “Don’t get too excited Julie, these nominations don’t really count for anything”. And in one swift moment he managed to extract every bit of joy and excitement from inside me.

It was in that moment that I realized that there are two types of managers in this world:

1. There’s the ‘seagull managers’ they swoop in squawking and flapping their wings, making noise and shitting crapping on everyone, and then, just as quickly as they flew in they fly out again. They're usually very dis-empowering to staff and they attempt to manage by humiliation and fear. Usually after speaking with them the employee feels de-energised or belittled. In a nutshell, after an encounter with a manager like this, an employee will be left feeling worse about themselves and not better.

2. And then there’s the empowering manager’s. I call them Empower Rangers, because they are the true superheroes of an organisation. They are true leaders that inspire their team to do more, they listen, they collaborate, they ask questions, they challenge, they praise, they encourage, they engage with their people. They train, they support, they develop and they coach their staff to DO better and to BE better. They believe in their team. They learn with their team. They lead by example. They are respected and most importantly they cultivate loyalty in an organisation.

The single most valuable thing I ever learned to do (professionally) was to learn how to become an effective leader. A leader that knows how to empower the people around me. Effective leaders know how to build and lead winning teams. They know how to motivate staff to do more, They build strong empowered teams that stay with your business.

As a business owner the most important question you need to ask yourself is “Are my managers importers or exporters of talent?” And that, my friends, is the new currency in business. Managers that know how to empower people so that they can cultivate loyal, long term, high performing teams.

The right leaders will create functioning environments for your team to produce mind blowing results and propel your business towards it’s goals.

At we give you the strategies to become an effective leader, to inspire your team and to accelerate your business growth through your most valuable asset… your people.

Woah! I'm really digging the template/theme of this site. It's simple, yet effective.
A lot of times it's difficult to get that "perfect balance" between usability and appearance. I must say you have done a fantastic job with this. Also, the blog loads very quick for me on Internet explorer. Exceptional Blog!
